Changes to NZ housing tax

The government’s changes to the housing tax regime in New Zealand will have a significant impact on rental property investors.

The amendments include:

Phasing out of mortgage interest tax deductibility on residential investment properties, with an exemption for “new builds”.

Ring-fencing: Rental deductions can now only be claimed against rental income, and landlords can no longer offset excess deductions against other income such as salary or wages.
